Nail Extensions Procedure

  1. Sanitise both yours and your clients hands.
  2. Check for contra indications.
  3. File all nails till they are short and follow the shape of the top of the finger.
  4. Using your double ended pusher, push back the proximal fold of the nail to expose maximum nail plate and any pterigium skin.
  5. Remove any dead pterigium skin with the knife end of the double ended pusher.
  6. Using a soft grit file,  remove any skin that is left on the nail plate and remove surface shine from the nail.
  7. Remove all dust with a nail brush.
  8. Apply one coat of nail dehydrator to sanitise and temporarily dehydrate the nail plate.
  9. Size and apply nail tips.
  10. Cut out the well if you are using full well tips.
  11. Pre blend the tips (if necessary) using a high grit file.
  12. Use a nail adhesive to stick the tips to the nails.
  13. The tip should click onto the free edge if the right size is selected, and the nail is filed to the correct shape.
  14. Using tip cutters, cut the tip to the required length. Always ask the client what length she would prefer, but always advise 1/3 of her nail bed for maximum strength.
  15. Shape the tip to match your clients requirements. Advise her that square is the strongest shape.
  16. Blend the tip (if necessary) by filing over the entire tip  until the seam becomes totally transparent. Care must be taken not to file the natural nail when blending.
  17. Remove all dust with a nail brush.
  18. Apply another coat of dehydrator.
  19. Apply another coat of primer.
  20. Place you kolinsky sable brush in the monomer to remove any air trapped in the brush. If this is not done, you will have air bubbles in your clients nails, which will show up clearly.
  21. Wipe your brush on clean tissue.
  22. Dip brush into monomer, and wipe it on the sides of the dappen dish.
  23. Place the very tip of the brush into the monomer.
  24. Place the tip of the brush into the polymer.
  25. Drag the brush across the top in one direction producing a bead of acrylic on one side of your brush.
  26. Place your first bead on the tip of the enhancement, and wipe your brush.
  27. Holding your brush at a tilted angle, push the product towards the stress zone.
  28. Wipe your brush throughout application to ensure you avoid leaving product in your brush.
  29. Repeat steps 22-25.
  30. Place a larger bead on the stress zone. Wipe your brush.
  31. Pat the product holding your brush flat. Use the belly of the brush for better control. You will need to ensure that the sidewalls are left clear of product.
  32. Repeat steps 22-25.
  33. Place a small bead at the cuticle, but not too close. You need to leave a 1-2 mm gap between the product and the cuticle.
  34. Hold the brush tilted down then push and drag the product round the cuticle and over the second bead.
  35. Using a medium grit file, file over the acrylic making sure that there is no product on the skin. There should not be a ridge at the cuticle. Do not hover over one spot or the nail will look flat.
  36. Use a buffer to buff nails to a high shine and to remove all scratches.
  37. Apply cuticle oil to all nails.

Cut the extensions down.

Cut the extensions down. Then either, put the nails in a bowl of acetone, covering the hands with a towel to prevent inhalation of the vapour and at intervals scrape the dissolved enhancement from the natural nail. Or soak some cotton wool in acetone and wrap it around each nail and cover with foil and leave until the enhancement is dissolved. After either procedure, manicure the hands and nails, using a good quality hand cream or apply a new set of extensions.
